Taking Care of Your Mental Health - Siya Patel

Life is always busy. Whether you are a student or an adult, we each have our struggles, different kinds of stress on our minds that won’t let us take a breath in peace. All the hustle and bustle can wear you down and negatively affect your mental health, resulting in low spirits and bad moods. It’s during times like this that you must take care of your mental state and give yourself a break.

I find that stepping out and taking a breath of fresh air or even going around the neighbourhood for just 5 minutes can make a huge difference. It gives you a chance to clear your head and reflect on what exactly the problem is. Oftentimes, by thinking of the problem when my mind is calmer, I realize it's not as big of a deal and can be solved faster than anticipated.

Another great way I like to relax is by writing it all down. Though keeping a journal seems like a lot of work, writing down your frustrations every once in a while is quite therapeutic. After a particularly tiring day, sometimes I need to vent out my frustration and I have found that by writing I can do just that. It’s amazing to feel the mental burden I have lighten when I reread what I write because it is just so calming. This also a great way to figure out what exactly is making you feel this way as there are no filters and you are being completely honest with yourself.

Everyone deals with feeling down in different ways, so I would love to hear how exactly you cope if you are open to the idea. Remember, your mental health is just as important as your physical health and if you need help don’t be afraid to ask for it. Stay safe!
